How Stereotypes Affect Us Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
How Stereotypes Affect Us - Assignment Example The safety and equality of the blacks are still not unconditional. Steele writes, ââ¬Å"They come from the way a society, at a given time, is organized around an identity like me. That organization reflects the place, as well as the ongoing individual and group competition for an opportunity and the good life.â⬠(3) An undeclared engagement is going on at every stage, in every segment of life of blacks and whites. Its emphasis and intensity may vary, nevertheless it is there, and it has not been erased from the social norms of the people of America. This position gives room for some to enjoy at the cost of suffering of others. Those others are mainly blacks. Defined and undefined activities related to ethnic segregation move together at the cost of the blacks. Stereotype threat is real. Its impact is more in the educational institutions, the abode of combustible younger generation, both whites and blacks. They have the knowledge of American history, whose pages are daubed in the bloodshed of racism. Explaining through an example, the author elaborates the nature of fear psychosis born out of stereotype threat, by citing the experience of Brent Staples, a psychology graduate student walking down the streets of Chicagoââ¬â¢s Hyde Park neighbourhood. ââ¬Å"I became an expert in the language of fear. Couples locked arms or reached for each otherââ¬â¢s hand when they saw me. Some crossed to the other side of the street. People who were carrying on conversations went mute and stared straight ahead, as though avoiding my eyes would save them.â⬠(6) By educating an individual, you are educating a generation. Therefore, educational institutions, where students of different ethnic groups, blacks and whites meet for a common purpose, are t he right places to initiate the process of reconciliation. Steele also highlights the importance of role models and argues, ââ¬Å"They dramatically reduced stereotype threats impairment of womenââ¬â¢s math performance by reminding them just before the test, the positive women role models.â⬠(94)à Ã

The following case is based on a personal experience in an organization that was embracing the Maori culture. I worked as a junior employee at Tikanga Maori Consulting, Inc. since its incorporation the company was based on the culture of the Maori community found in New Zealand. The operations of the company were based on values and beliefs of the Maori culture. The founding members of the organization were determined to protect the Maori culture and made every efforts towards making sure that any stakeholders in the company respected the values and customs of the company that were based on the Maori culture. This was evident in the way the company had designed its vision statement. The companyââ¬Ës vision statement purely focused on Maori norms and values. The company communicated these values in the Maori language in efforts aimed at reinforcing the approach of communicating the organizationââ¬â¢s culture to the stakeholders. The company developed over a long period of time and grew into a big organization with approximately over 100 employees. The growth of an organization often represents a difficult situation in terms of managing the number of employees. However, the organization was able to manage its large number of employees because it had also grown to develop its culture. Employees were in unity with the company management because the company had made a point to always communicate to the employees about the different values of the company. The philosophy of the company was based on developing and preserving the Maori culture. The

Deregulation of Airline Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Deregulation of Airline Industry - Essay Example This turned away many potential investorsââ¬â¢ as well international airlines to the restrictive measures that this body had put in place. This led to policy makers to rethink the operation in this industry and the contribution that the regulation imposed by the CBA affected the growth of this industry (Sinha, 2004). Therefore, in 1978 the Airline Deregulation Act was enacted in an effort to reverse the slow growth that this industry experienced. The main aims of this paper is critical analyze and evaluate the effects of deregulation to the major stake holders in this industry as well consider how it affected various micro economic variables (Smith & Cox, 2011). Before deregulation airline on competed on the basis of the quality of the cabin crew, the frequency in which the airline offered its services and other auxiliary services such food they offered to their client, price were fixed since they were regulated by the CBA (Smith & Cox, 2011). ... This increased completion among the existing airlines and the new airlines that were joining the market. Therefore, competition basis shifted from food and the frequency to the fares that airlines charged (Sinha, 2004). The increased competition which was being experienced in the market, led to establishment of low cost airlines such as the Ryanair in Europe after the European Union deregulated the airline industry. Low cost airlines charges lower prices so to facilitate their establishment in the market. The low cost airlines assumed that consumers of airlines service were rational that is there price responsive, therefore if the charged lower price they would be to capture a considerable proportion of the market (Krugman & Wells, 2009). Deregulation was advantages to the consumers of services from this industry since increases in supply caused the prices charged in this to decline as illustrated below by graph entitled average domestic airfares. Decline in the fares charged by the airlines was beneficial to consumers, since this increased consumer surplus (Krugman & Wells, 2009). In addition to this consumers had a wide variety to choose from; that is due to the increase in the number of airlines the consumers now had wide service provider to choose from. The quality of services offered in this industry also improved as compared to the time before deregulation. When the number of airline service provider increased in the market every airline had to brand its services as best in the market. This was beneficial to the customer as he obtained more quality services at cheaper prices (Sinha, 2004). The decrease in prices and improvement in quality fostered increased

The cry of humanity Essay Example for Free
The cry of humanity Essay Many people often cry for this word in some parts of their lives. People express their craving for this entity in different manners such that protests and silent rebellion can be counted as examples of expression of the desire in attaining freedom. People may seem to be so vulnerable when it comes to freedom that they tend to freak out whenever their freedom is being suppressed by other people, say parents or government leaders. I, being a member of the human society also cry for this at times. I am pleading to have my allowance be increased during my high school days and I do not want anyone to hinder my joy in my party life with my friends. Moreover, I want to have my own kitchen and my room so I am free of making my own sandwich with no one to share and ask ââ¬Å"for the nth time around, why are you still eating? â⬠Freedom for me is act of being free to do things whether it is good or bad. Freedom only differs with the words that are tagged to it say for academic freedom, spiritual freedom and political freedom. Academic freedom is something that can be related with the right of every child to be sent to school and receive the essential information about life and sciences. Nowadays, technology is in its boost however, many people especially the youth are not receiving it due to poverty and some terrorism attacks in their country. Political freedom on the other hand, is the appropriateness of the rights and privileges received by each member of the society. When girls are not allowed or permitted to enter politics due to the patriarchal norms of the country, she is experiencing political depression. Spiritual freedom goes with the ability of every person to express their faith without persecution and judgment from others. It is the moment of freely obeying what is in ones doctrines with the practices of a religion or a sect. Faith: An Expression of Freedom From the time of Moses, when the Israelites are still slaves by the Pharaoh Ramesis, they are not able to see the reality that there is a true God aside from the statues and walls of the pyramids or palaces. They were just given the idea that gods can transform stick into snakes but not with some interventions like setting them completely free. Moses actually had doubts the first time he has been called by God at the burning bush and had Aaron to talk for him, as it was commanded by the One who talked to Moses. It was when they believed that there is a far better life than serving the Egyptians. They were able to escape them through the guidance of God hence they were able to head for the Promised Land that is full of flowing milk and honey: that is Canaan, for instance. Christianity is one of the most populated religions in the world. Apparently, most of the societies follow by the practices and the traditions of the said religion. They perceive men would be the best leaders for the society thus sometimes giving no chance for women who have potentials also in leading the church. I now of a church that do not give an account in letting their women preach for they believe in the abilities of men. Society has been a part of molding the beliefs of every people in the world. Since it is composed of many different parts like norms, values and ethics, one may not be so shocked that people really have different point of views on things. Luckily, there are passionate people that give time in studying them. Freedom in choosing a religion is more prevalent during our time since there were already people who fought for it during the early 15th to 17th century. The battle of being recognized as people with strong and distinguished faith is not a problem anymore. There may be different religions that can be seen else where like Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist and Muslims, but we are lucky enough to have the chance to choose the religion that suits our lifestyle. Perhaps will not be our passes to eternal life, but it is our faith that separates us from others and with that, we will be living with those standards as long as we are alive. Speaking our freedom Mass media is a source of information that gives us the idea of the current events in our country. Whether news pertains to celebrities or politicians or calamities, the existence of the developed broadcasting or journalism is a big help in easing some of our lifeââ¬â¢s problems. During some points in the martial law, and dictatorial presidency or leadership of some leaders in the world, the news and public affairs of those were put into a shut, giving no opportunities for them to report the true and correct occurrences in their country. Those people who will rebelliously report the anomaly will be soon in the death bed with a bullet on their head or chest part. Ellis obviously gave his points of view regarding this matter. He cited some examples that can give us the idea of what freedom of speech is. The presentation of ideas were detailed hence it gave me the feeling that media should not be oppressed for telling the truth. It should be fought for instances of government abuse. Freedom of speech doesnââ¬â¢t only occur on the broadcasting part of the society but also in the inner communities wherein the normal people lives. It is the way people express their ideas with no hesitations and no other people that would tell them what to do. It does not necessarily mean going with the opposite flow of the norms but rather, it is an opportunity to bring more treasures in the mind bank of every civilizations. For sure, there are many beliefs that are outdated and can not be applied to the present situation of the world. With that, presentation of ideas is necessary to solve some of the troubles at a certain time. Ideas are best presented with no hesitations, but I agree that it is a healthy way of enriching a bodyââ¬â¢s mind through some exchange of ideas that can actually get into a conclusion that resolves the case yet, both parties had their own time for shining, explaining their point of views. Questioning may be a good sign of comprehension thus signifies the impact of the thing that we are after. Freedom for both As many people have argued and died for religion and freedom of expression, we must note that we are fortunate that we were born in an era where we no longer have to battle with guns and swords for it like the gladiators and the cowboys before. Having them establish at this point will b\make it much more easier for us to choose what is right rather than seeking for it or founding a new one. Both religion and speech are parts of our lives that our essential in our beings. Religion, as we all know has the idea of god or gods that direct our path to what we think is right. It may show us the best way to do things in their right place and time. While speech is a channel of ourselves that help us be known by others. It is very important that we are able to fight for them thus our rights for living may not be suppressed also. There may be instances that people will contradict what we believe in but it is very important that we truly know what we are standing and living for. Life is a matter of believing and striving for some realizations. References Freedom of Speech ââ¬â Reader Feedback and Response. Differences Between The Vietnamese And Americans Cultural Studies Essay
Differences Between The Vietnamese And Americans Cultural Studies Essay Literature review: Definitions Concept of face: There are many definitions of face. But in general, face is an image of self delineated in terms of approved social attributes. Goffman conceptualizes face as the positive social value a person effectively claims for himself or herself by the line others assume he or she has taken during a particular contact. He also (1955) also argues that face can be lost, saved and/ or given. He (1967) further suggests two foci of face: self-face (ones own face) and other-face (others face). One not only defends self-face but also protects other-face during interactions (as cited in cross-cultural and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting- Toomey, p.49, 1994) According to George Yule in pragmatics (1996), there are two types of face: Negative face: a person joining in communication needs to be independent and has freedom of action. He or she does not want to be imposed on by others. (George (1996), p.61) Positive face: a person joining in communication needs to be accepted even liked by others. He or she wants to be treated as a member of the same group, and to know that his or her wants are shared by others (George (1996), p.62) Other terms: Cross-cultural communication: Culture is communication and communication is culture (Hall, 1959). Cross-cultural communication is communication (verbal and nonverbal) between people from different cultures; cultural values, belief, attitudes, etc has an impact on communication (as cited in cross-cultural communication, Ho Thi My Hau, 2001). And we can realize cross-cultural communication on people through their reactions and responses to each other. Face-saving: As James R. Silkena (2009) stated that Face-saving may be defined as the act of preserving ones prestige or outward dignity (p.154) Face-saving is one of the ways to preserve politeness when people joining in conversation. As George Yule (1996) stated that given the possibility that some action might be interpreted as a threat to anothers face, the speaker can say something to lessen the possible threat. This is a face-saving act (p.61) Politeness: Politeness is an act of awareness of other peoples face. Brown and Levinson is two major representatives on politeness and when we talk about them we no doubt talk about their models politeness that is considered as the greatest impact on language research in general and on intercultural communication in particular. And according to Brown and Levinson, two main sides of politeness include positive politeness and negative politeness. Positive politeness: People joining communication want to be praised and respected. Ex: a. How about lending me some money? Hey, Bucky, Id appreciate it if youd let me borrow you money. This kind of politeness is seen in every life and the speakers want the others to be pleased and glad. That can lead to be easy for every issue for both speakers and listeners. Negative politeness In contrast to positive politeness, people joining communication want to be independent and not to be treated. Ex: Could you lend me your money? Im sorry to bother you but can I ask you for your money? Face saving act is more commonly performed via a negative politeness (George, p.64). In conclusion, in Brown and Levinsons model the complement hope and self-control are the most fundamental force of politeness. Face-saving function as politeness: Socio-norm view: Face-saving has functions as politeness. People in communication consider preserving face-saving as one of politenesss issues. Face-saving is concerned all over the world. And it is a universal one; however, the characteristic of face-saving is so different through the world. And that is reason why it is concerned as socio-norm view in our society. Preserving face-saving for ourselves and others plays an important role in preserving social relations among people. As a result, people avoid losing face while communicating with others. Face-saving function as politeness: Self-face: Person engaging in communication tries to save his/ her face in front of the others. In this regard, the speakers appreciate their independence or individualism. And preserving their face in front of other people is the most important thing. As a result, they try to avoid being caused to lose face by themselves among people. Other-face: Person engaging in communication tries to save the other face in front of the others. Partner avoids lose the politeness and tries to follow the conversational principles. In communication, other-face may be the most concerned one than self-face. This is one of the important issues in preserving politeness. In brief, as in a study of Baxter (1984), the Japanese often concerns much more on self-face than others. In contrast, the American people seem to concern much more on other-face than self-face. There were also differences in the situations individuals thought maintaining self-face was important. Japanese wanted to preserve self-face inprivate, informal, and intimate situations. North Americans, in contrast, wanted to maintain self-face in public, formal, and nonintimate settings (The challenge of facework: cross and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting Toomy, p.55-56) Socio-cultural impacts on face-saving: The positive social value a person effectively claims for himself or herself (Goffman, 1995, p.213) The concept of face-saving through is different from cultures worldwide. In such a culture with strong face-saving viewpoint, all business could end up if one side or another is leaded to lose face. In this culture, face-saving plays a more important role than business issues. On the other hand, in such a culture with weak face-saving viewpoint, all business could continue if one side or another is leaded to lose face. In this culture, business issues play more important than face-saving. In Hos view, face is never a purely individual thing. It does not make sense to speak of the face of an individual as something lodged within his (her) person; it is meaningful; only when his (her) face is considered in relation to that of others in the social network (p. 882) (as cited in The challenge of facework: cross-cultural and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting Toomy, p. 51) To Vietnam, although C.kerbrat orecchioni did not arrange Vietnam as in negative politeness society, we can realize it in some Vietnamese folk verses and proverbs like: Ta và ¡Ã »Ã ta tà ¡Ã ºÃ ¯m ao ta Dà ¹ trong dà ¹ Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡Ã »Ã ¥c ao nhà và ¡Ã ºÃ «n hÃâ à ¡nà Trà ¢u ta ÃâÃân cà ¡Ã »Ã Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬Å"ng ta Tuy rà ¡Ã ºÃ ±ng cà ¡Ã »Ã cà ¡Ã »Ã ¥t nhÃâ à °ng là cà ¡Ã »Ã thÃâ à ¡mà The view of face-saving is always associated with face-losing in Vietnamese viewpoint that is performed in: Tà ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬Ët danh hÃâ à ¡n là là nh à ¡o NgÃâ à °Ã ¡Ã »Ã i ta hà ¡Ã »Ã ¯u tà ¡Ã »Ã hà ¡Ã »Ã ¯u sinh, Sà ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬Ëng lo xà ¡Ã »Ã ©ng phà ¡Ã ºÃ n, thà ¡c danh tià ¡Ã ºÃ ¿ng thÃâ à ¡mà à Ãâà em chuà ´ng Ãâââ¬Ëi Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡nh xà ¡Ã »Ã © ngÃâ à °Ã ¡Ã »Ã i Chà ¡Ã ºÃ ³ng kà ªu, cÃâ¦Ã ©ng Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡Ã ºÃ ¥m mà ¡Ã »Ã¢â ¢t hà ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬Å"i là ¡Ã ºÃ ¥y danhà à In addition, vietnamese folk verses and proverbs also reflect the reverse side of face-saving like: Tà ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬Ët Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡Ã ºÃ ¹p phà ´ ra, xà ¡Ã ºÃ ¥u xa Ãâââ¬Ëà ¡Ã ºÃ y là ¡Ã ºÃ ¡i khi là nh khà ´ng gà ¡Ã ºÃ ·p, khi rà ¡ch gà ¡Ã ºÃ ·p là ¡Ã ºÃ ¯m ngÃâ à °Ã ¡Ã »Ã i quen Vietnamese often consider face-saving to be a survival issue of each and vice versa losing face is considered to be more serious than death. And Vietnamese absolutely avoid being lost face or they make all ways to avoid losing other-face that is performed as followed: Hoa thÃâ à ¡m ai nà ¡Ã »Ã ¡ bà ¡Ã »Ã rÃâ à ¡i NgÃâ à °Ã ¡Ã »Ã i khà ´n ai nà ¡Ã »Ã ¡ nà ¡Ã ºÃ ·ng là ¡Ã »Ã i và ¡Ã »Ã¢â¬ ºi ai Là ¡Ã »Ã i nà ³i chà ¡Ã ºÃ ³ng mà ¡Ã ºÃ ¥t tià ¡Ã »Ã n mua Là ¡Ã »Ã ±a là ¡Ã »Ã i mà nà ³i cho và ¡Ã »Ã «a là ²ng nhau Thua trà ¡Ã »Ã i mà ¡Ã »Ã¢â ¢t và ¡Ã ºÃ ¡n khà ´ng bà ¡Ã ºÃ ±ng thua bà ¡Ã ºÃ ¡n mà ¡Ã »Ã¢â ¢t ly As well as the Vietnamese in particular and in Asian culture in general, the American also have their face-saving. They also do not want to lose face in front of other people. American people appreciate the individualism and they often do not concern on the others thought. Saying no in front of the others is not considered to be rude that is a necessary demand to avoid misunderstanding tomorrow. A typical example is that in Asian finance crisis in 1997, many Japanese managers suicide because they think their action is one of the ways to protect their human dignity. But to the American, at the same circumstance, they are not to do like that. As a result, they want to make the others progress then. Conclusion: Through the study, we can realize that American communications in face-saving often appreciate each persons individualism and they seem not to focus on collectivist face-saving. Vietnamese, on the other hand, often appreciate collectivist face-saving than self-face saving. That does not mean I indicate which is better, I want to say in general one issue. That is also appropriate to the two cultural communications American and Vietnam. If we can understand clearly this face-saving in communication that can help us contribute to having proper communication style and avoid regrettable mistakes and conflicts in a cross-cultural communication. In this study, I give you the comparison between the two cultures Vietnamese and American that is not to judge which culture is more polite in face-saving while communication. That is the reason why we could not consider this culture to be higher than another one.

The main goal of networking marketing business is to build a group of team members that is wide and deep however it is more profitable to build wide in getting fresh new business people on board to try your product and unique opportunity. This is the fundamental thing that so few understand when it comes to the MLM industry. If you want to create a business that lasts, in this industry, you have to be willing to work hard at least in the very beginning. You can build your business as part time as you want in as few as hours as you want but that also means you can take as long as you want. I suggest putting as much time as possible into your business without overly sacrificing your sanity or your family, at least in the beginning. When you get your business to over $10,000 a month residually, you can afford to goà on more trips and vacations. This is the main point of our industry. There is light at the end of the tunnel. With almost all small businesses and almost all jobs, there is no light. You trade dollars for hours, as you rise the rank and compensation ladder, more is expected of you and if you want to slow down, especially in these times, you might get booted out. In this industry, it actually, to the contrary, gets easier. Now, most flake out before they get to the easy part. They either give up out of lack of faith or work ethic or they get to a point where they are making money and take their foot off the gas or lose their focus too soon. Beware of these as they are the killers of the greatly talented. I see it on a DAILY basis where someone of great talent destroys what they were in the process of building to do something else or slack off and think they are at a point where it will automatically grow. There is a 99% chance that you will NOT get to a point of lifetime automatic income prior to 2-3 years of intense focus. Now you know why so few people have what it takes, but, armed with this knowledge, you now do. To sell products is the perception of some people in networking business. Networking business is not actually centered in selling products but they invite people who will help them to build a profitable business. If you engage in a networking business, they will give you their products as part of your investment. In Frontrow Enterprise Philippines Incorporated, to sell products is just an option for you. If you invest in their company, you will receive their products and it is up to you if you will sell it or use it for your own needs. In making your networking business profitable, you must be able to exert effort in doing that business. Even some people take it as their part time, it needs a hard work for them to earn profit. Interacting with other people is one of the eagerness of the person in doing their business cost-effective. Some person who engaged in FRONTROW is still students and they can support themselves by the money they receive. Company events and recruitment tactics have hyped things like earnings potential, creating the impression that itââ¬â¢s only a matter of time before you will be rolling in Cadillacs and caviar. Most network marketing recruits never achieve that level of success. In fact, the majority of network marketing recruits never even realize a profit. Network marketingà can be profitable ââ¬â it just takes an organized and structured approach to get there. Towards that end, these network marketing business tips should come in handy: Understand Your Costs; Create Lists; Make Sales Calls; Stay Focused; Leverage Team Resources.
