Deregulation of Airline Industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Deregulation of Airline Industry - Essay Example This turned away many potential investors’ as well international airlines to the restrictive measures that this body had put in place. This led to policy makers to rethink the operation in this industry and the contribution that the regulation imposed by the CBA affected the growth of this industry (Sinha, 2004). Therefore, in 1978 the Airline Deregulation Act was enacted in an effort to reverse the slow growth that this industry experienced. The main aims of this paper is critical analyze and evaluate the effects of deregulation to the major stake holders in this industry as well consider how it affected various micro economic variables (Smith & Cox, 2011). Before deregulation airline on competed on the basis of the quality of the cabin crew, the frequency in which the airline offered its services and other auxiliary services such food they offered to their client, price were fixed since they were regulated by the CBA (Smith & Cox, 2011). ... This increased completion among the existing airlines and the new airlines that were joining the market. Therefore, competition basis shifted from food and the frequency to the fares that airlines charged (Sinha, 2004). The increased competition which was being experienced in the market, led to establishment of low cost airlines such as the Ryanair in Europe after the European Union deregulated the airline industry. Low cost airlines charges lower prices so to facilitate their establishment in the market. The low cost airlines assumed that consumers of airlines service were rational that is there price responsive, therefore if the charged lower price they would be to capture a considerable proportion of the market (Krugman & Wells, 2009). Deregulation was advantages to the consumers of services from this industry since increases in supply caused the prices charged in this to decline as illustrated below by graph entitled average domestic airfares. Decline in the fares charged by the airlines was beneficial to consumers, since this increased consumer surplus (Krugman & Wells, 2009). In addition to this consumers had a wide variety to choose from; that is due to the increase in the number of airlines the consumers now had wide service provider to choose from. The quality of services offered in this industry also improved as compared to the time before deregulation. When the number of airline service provider increased in the market every airline had to brand its services as best in the market. This was beneficial to the customer as he obtained more quality services at cheaper prices (Sinha, 2004). The decrease in prices and improvement in quality fostered increased

The cry of humanity Essay Example for Free

The cry of humanity Essay Many people often cry for this word in some parts of their lives. People express their craving for this entity in different manners such that protests and silent rebellion can be counted as examples of expression of the desire in attaining freedom. People may seem to be so vulnerable when it comes to freedom that they tend to freak out whenever their freedom is being suppressed by other people, say parents or government leaders. I, being a member of the human society also cry for this at times. I am pleading to have my allowance be increased during my high school days and I do not want anyone to hinder my joy in my party life with my friends. Moreover, I want to have my own kitchen and my room so I am free of making my own sandwich with no one to share and ask â€Å"for the nth time around, why are you still eating? † Freedom for me is act of being free to do things whether it is good or bad. Freedom only differs with the words that are tagged to it say for academic freedom, spiritual freedom and political freedom. Academic freedom is something that can be related with the right of every child to be sent to school and receive the essential information about life and sciences. Nowadays, technology is in its boost however, many people especially the youth are not receiving it due to poverty and some terrorism attacks in their country. Political freedom on the other hand, is the appropriateness of the rights and privileges received by each member of the society. When girls are not allowed or permitted to enter politics due to the patriarchal norms of the country, she is experiencing political depression. Spiritual freedom goes with the ability of every person to express their faith without persecution and judgment from others. It is the moment of freely obeying what is in ones doctrines with the practices of a religion or a sect. Faith: An Expression of Freedom From the time of Moses, when the Israelites are still slaves by the Pharaoh Ramesis, they are not able to see the reality that there is a true God aside from the statues and walls of the pyramids or palaces. They were just given the idea that gods can transform stick into snakes but not with some interventions like setting them completely free. Moses actually had doubts the first time he has been called by God at the burning bush and had Aaron to talk for him, as it was commanded by the One who talked to Moses. It was when they believed that there is a far better life than serving the Egyptians. They were able to escape them through the guidance of God hence they were able to head for the Promised Land that is full of flowing milk and honey: that is Canaan, for instance. Christianity is one of the most populated religions in the world. Apparently, most of the societies follow by the practices and the traditions of the said religion. They perceive men would be the best leaders for the society thus sometimes giving no chance for women who have potentials also in leading the church. I now of a church that do not give an account in letting their women preach for they believe in the abilities of men. Society has been a part of molding the beliefs of every people in the world. Since it is composed of many different parts like norms, values and ethics, one may not be so shocked that people really have different point of views on things. Luckily, there are passionate people that give time in studying them. Freedom in choosing a religion is more prevalent during our time since there were already people who fought for it during the early 15th to 17th century. The battle of being recognized as people with strong and distinguished faith is not a problem anymore. There may be different religions that can be seen else where like Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist and Muslims, but we are lucky enough to have the chance to choose the religion that suits our lifestyle. Perhaps will not be our passes to eternal life, but it is our faith that separates us from others and with that, we will be living with those standards as long as we are alive. Speaking our freedom Mass media is a source of information that gives us the idea of the current events in our country. Whether news pertains to celebrities or politicians or calamities, the existence of the developed broadcasting or journalism is a big help in easing some of our life’s problems. During some points in the martial law, and dictatorial presidency or leadership of some leaders in the world, the news and public affairs of those were put into a shut, giving no opportunities for them to report the true and correct occurrences in their country. Those people who will rebelliously report the anomaly will be soon in the death bed with a bullet on their head or chest part. Ellis obviously gave his points of view regarding this matter. He cited some examples that can give us the idea of what freedom of speech is. The presentation of ideas were detailed hence it gave me the feeling that media should not be oppressed for telling the truth. It should be fought for instances of government abuse. Freedom of speech doesn’t only occur on the broadcasting part of the society but also in the inner communities wherein the normal people lives. It is the way people express their ideas with no hesitations and no other people that would tell them what to do. It does not necessarily mean going with the opposite flow of the norms but rather, it is an opportunity to bring more treasures in the mind bank of every civilizations. For sure, there are many beliefs that are outdated and can not be applied to the present situation of the world. With that, presentation of ideas is necessary to solve some of the troubles at a certain time. Ideas are best presented with no hesitations, but I agree that it is a healthy way of enriching a body’s mind through some exchange of ideas that can actually get into a conclusion that resolves the case yet, both parties had their own time for shining, explaining their point of views. Questioning may be a good sign of comprehension thus signifies the impact of the thing that we are after. Freedom for both As many people have argued and died for religion and freedom of expression, we must note that we are fortunate that we were born in an era where we no longer have to battle with guns and swords for it like the gladiators and the cowboys before. Having them establish at this point will b\make it much more easier for us to choose what is right rather than seeking for it or founding a new one. Both religion and speech are parts of our lives that our essential in our beings. Religion, as we all know has the idea of god or gods that direct our path to what we think is right. It may show us the best way to do things in their right place and time. While speech is a channel of ourselves that help us be known by others. It is very important that we are able to fight for them thus our rights for living may not be suppressed also. There may be instances that people will contradict what we believe in but it is very important that we truly know what we are standing and living for. Life is a matter of believing and striving for some realizations. References Freedom of Speech – Reader Feedback and Response. Differences Between The Vietnamese And Americans Cultural Studies Essay

Differences Between The Vietnamese And Americans Cultural Studies Essay Literature review: Definitions Concept of face: There are many definitions of face. But in general, face is an image of self delineated in terms of approved social attributes. Goffman conceptualizes face as the positive social value a person effectively claims for himself or herself by the line others assume he or she has taken during a particular contact. He also (1955) also argues that face can be lost, saved and/ or given. He (1967) further suggests two foci of face: self-face (ones own face) and other-face (others face). One not only defends self-face but also protects other-face during interactions (as cited in cross-cultural and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting- Toomey, p.49, 1994) According to George Yule in pragmatics (1996), there are two types of face: Negative face: a person joining in communication needs to be independent and has freedom of action. He or she does not want to be imposed on by others. (George (1996), p.61) Positive face: a person joining in communication needs to be accepted even liked by others. He or she wants to be treated as a member of the same group, and to know that his or her wants are shared by others (George (1996), p.62) Other terms: Cross-cultural communication: Culture is communication and communication is culture (Hall, 1959). Cross-cultural communication is communication (verbal and nonverbal) between people from different cultures; cultural values, belief, attitudes, etc has an impact on communication (as cited in cross-cultural communication, Ho Thi My Hau, 2001). And we can realize cross-cultural communication on people through their reactions and responses to each other. Face-saving: As James R. Silkena (2009) stated that Face-saving may be defined as the act of preserving ones prestige or outward dignity (p.154) Face-saving is one of the ways to preserve politeness when people joining in conversation. As George Yule (1996) stated that given the possibility that some action might be interpreted as a threat to anothers face, the speaker can say something to lessen the possible threat. This is a face-saving act (p.61) Politeness: Politeness is an act of awareness of other peoples face. Brown and Levinson is two major representatives on politeness and when we talk about them we no doubt talk about their models politeness that is considered as the greatest impact on language research in general and on intercultural communication in particular. And according to Brown and Levinson, two main sides of politeness include positive politeness and negative politeness. Positive politeness: People joining communication want to be praised and respected. Ex: a. How about lending me some money? Hey, Bucky, Id appreciate it if youd let me borrow you money. This kind of politeness is seen in every life and the speakers want the others to be pleased and glad. That can lead to be easy for every issue for both speakers and listeners. Negative politeness In contrast to positive politeness, people joining communication want to be independent and not to be treated. Ex: Could you lend me your money? Im sorry to bother you but can I ask you for your money? Face saving act is more commonly performed via a negative politeness (George, p.64). In conclusion, in Brown and Levinsons model the complement hope and self-control are the most fundamental force of politeness. Face-saving function as politeness: Socio-norm view: Face-saving has functions as politeness. People in communication consider preserving face-saving as one of politenesss issues. Face-saving is concerned all over the world. And it is a universal one; however, the characteristic of face-saving is so different through the world. And that is reason why it is concerned as socio-norm view in our society. Preserving face-saving for ourselves and others plays an important role in preserving social relations among people. As a result, people avoid losing face while communicating with others. Face-saving function as politeness: Self-face: Person engaging in communication tries to save his/ her face in front of the others. In this regard, the speakers appreciate their independence or individualism. And preserving their face in front of other people is the most important thing. As a result, they try to avoid being caused to lose face by themselves among people. Other-face: Person engaging in communication tries to save the other face in front of the others. Partner avoids lose the politeness and tries to follow the conversational principles. In communication, other-face may be the most concerned one than self-face. This is one of the important issues in preserving politeness. In brief, as in a study of Baxter (1984), the Japanese often concerns much more on self-face than others. In contrast, the American people seem to concern much more on other-face than self-face. There were also differences in the situations individuals thought maintaining self-face was important. Japanese wanted to preserve self-face inprivate, informal, and intimate situations. North Americans, in contrast, wanted to maintain self-face in public, formal, and nonintimate settings (The challenge of facework: cross and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting Toomy, p.55-56) Socio-cultural impacts on face-saving: The positive social value a person effectively claims for himself or herself (Goffman, 1995, p.213) The concept of face-saving through is different from cultures worldwide. In such a culture with strong face-saving viewpoint, all business could end up if one side or another is leaded to lose face. In this culture, face-saving plays a more important role than business issues. On the other hand, in such a culture with weak face-saving viewpoint, all business could continue if one side or another is leaded to lose face. In this culture, business issues play more important than face-saving. In Hos view, face is never a purely individual thing. It does not make sense to speak of the face of an individual as something lodged within his (her) person; it is meaningful; only when his (her) face is considered in relation to that of others in the social network (p. 882) (as cited in The challenge of facework: cross-cultural and interpersonal issues, Stella Ting Toomy, p. 51) To Vietnam, although C.kerbrat orecchioni did not arrange Vietnam as in negative politeness society, we can realize it in some Vietnamese folk verses and proverbs like: Ta và ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ta tà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¯m ao ta Dà ¹ trong dà ¹ Ä‘Ã ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¥c ao nhà   và ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ «n hÆ ¡n   Trà ¢u ta ăn cà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ Ä‘Ã ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬Å"ng ta Tuy rà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ±ng cà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ cà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¥t nhÆ °ng là   cà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ thÆ ¡m   The view of face-saving is always associated with face-losing in Vietnamese viewpoint that is performed in: Tà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬Ëœt danh hÆ ¡n là   là  nh à ¡o NgÆ °Ãƒ ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i ta hà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¯u tà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ hà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¯u sinh, Sà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬Ëœng lo xà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ©ng phà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ n, thà ¡c danh tià ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¿ng thÆ ¡m  Ã‚   Ä em chuà ´ng Ä‘i Ä‘Ã ¡nh xà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ © ngÆ °Ãƒ ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i Chà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ³ng kà ªu, cÃ…Â ©ng Ä‘Ã ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¥m mà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â€ž ¢t hà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬Å"i là ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¥y danh  Ã‚   In addition, vietnamese folk verses and proverbs also reflect the reverse side of face-saving like: Tà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬Ëœt Ä‘Ã ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¹p phà ´ ra, xà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¥u xa Ä‘Ã ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ y là ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¡i khi là  nh khà ´ng gà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ·p, khi rà ¡ch gà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ·p là ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¯m ngÆ °Ãƒ ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i quen Vietnamese often consider face-saving to be a survival issue of each and vice versa losing face is considered to be more serious than death. And Vietnamese absolutely avoid being lost face or they make all ways to avoid losing other-face that is performed as followed: Hoa thÆ ¡m ai nà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¡ bà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ rÆ ¡i NgÆ °Ãƒ ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i khà ´n ai nà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ¡ nà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ·ng là ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i và ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â‚¬ ºi ai Là ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i nà ³i chà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ³ng mà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¥t tià ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ n mua Là ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ ±a là ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i mà   nà ³i cho và ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ «a là ²ng nhau Thua trà ¡Ã‚ »Ã‚ i mà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â€ž ¢t và ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¡n khà ´ng bà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ±ng thua bà ¡Ã‚ ºÃ‚ ¡n mà ¡Ã‚ »Ã¢â€ž ¢t ly As well as the Vietnamese in particular and in Asian culture in general, the American also have their face-saving. They also do not want to lose face in front of other people. American people appreciate the individualism and they often do not concern on the others thought. Saying no in front of the others is not considered to be rude that is a necessary demand to avoid misunderstanding tomorrow. A typical example is that in Asian finance crisis in 1997, many Japanese managers suicide because they think their action is one of the ways to protect their human dignity. But to the American, at the same circumstance, they are not to do like that. As a result, they want to make the others progress then. Conclusion: Through the study, we can realize that American communications in face-saving often appreciate each persons individualism and they seem not to focus on collectivist face-saving. Vietnamese, on the other hand, often appreciate collectivist face-saving than self-face saving. That does not mean I indicate which is better, I want to say in general one issue. That is also appropriate to the two cultural communications American and Vietnam. If we can understand clearly this face-saving in communication that can help us contribute to having proper communication style and avoid regrettable mistakes and conflicts in a cross-cultural communication. In this study, I give you the comparison between the two cultures Vietnamese and American that is not to judge which culture is more polite in face-saving while communication. That is the reason why we could not consider this culture to be higher than another one.

Subjects for Other Conversations :: essays research papers

Categorized Poems from Subjects for other Conversations   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In John Stigall’s book, Subjects for Other Conversations, all of the thirty-seven poems can be placed into one of five different categories. These categories include sadness, racism, happiness, sex, and religion.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sadness, the first category, includes ten of the thirty seven poems. These poems express hate, anger, and depression about many things in life, from growing old to losing a child. These poems are â€Å"Poem on Turning Forty,† â€Å"Poem on Turning Forty-Five,† â€Å"Blues,† â€Å"Impromptu,† â€Å"Into the Life of This World,† â€Å"Some People,† â€Å"The Revenant,† â€Å"In the Bibleblack Air,† â€Å"Approaching,† and â€Å"Final Approach†. In Stigall’s poem, â€Å"Poem on Turning Forty,† he talks about how women aren’t as attracted to him now. And you can tell he’s depressed about growing old. The poem â€Å"Into the Life of This World,† talks about losing a child at birth. Stigall’s light use of words, such as perfect, calm, and silent agony, shows that this poem is full of intense emotions and sadness. I. At thirty-three, too young to be sickened into the light, my father’s body-perfect, calm-forms a fetal curl about its silent agony. His eyes, suggestive & articulate, explain. The light wanes II.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Silent, I refuse the firsts breaths (cradled in   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  the light). My   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  body- stillborn, calm, numb from the canal-appears   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  deaf, dumb See the physician & my mourning mother curl over me, warping my flesh, weeping, praying me into the life of this world (30)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The next category is racism. These three poems describe how racism still exists today. The poems show how hateful people can be towards someone of a different race. These poems are â€Å"December/ January,† â€Å"Brazil Nuts,† and â€Å"Up in Dixie†. In all three of these poems, Stigall never seems to show any anger. He just tells of his experiences in plain and simple terms. In â€Å"Brazil Nuts,† Stigall talks about how when he was a child, how he never questioned racism. But now as a man he doesn’t understand why racism hasn’t gone away. When I was a Child I understood as a child I did not question as a child I accepted as a child   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   But when I became a man the old folks down south still call them Nigger Toes (39)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Four of Stigall’s thirty-seven poems can be put into the category happiness. These four poems are light and pleasant. They talk about things such as music, people and Stigall’s children. These poems are â€Å"This Sabbath Afternoon,† â€Å"No 3 Tanka,† â€Å"If the Past Ever Existed,† and â€Å"†101 West 123Rd Street†. In â€Å"This Sabbath Afternoon†, Stigall talks about watching his children playing.

And it will also help to build self-confidence and having a good communication to others, the reason why is networking need to be powerful in communication and have a knowledge to deliver the ideas into one another. But first, believing to yourself and having a high confidence is more important. Here in network marketing, making business relationship is very important. Engaging a large group of team members and cross selling is one of the most important aspects in becoming profitable in a Network Marketing Business. Keen business sense is required as well as your tact in speaking to your network of business people. The smoother and more dedicated you are, the more money you will make from your work efforts. As you begin to build your network marketing business first imagine a large network of outlets of people. Belief you will be able to reach a large base of clients who will be thrilled to use your product or service in your network marketing business. Each network and person who knows about your services and product represents  the potential for sales. The more networks and people you influence the more products you will be able to sell. Once you have established a client base cross selling to existing clients becomes a way to maximize profits. Generating repeated sales is easier when your product is usable and consumed like the sale of soaps, vitamins and shoes as opposed to selling a piece of furniture for instance. When you have a team of members on your side helping you to build your network marketing business it becomes easier to motivate these entrepreneurs to make additional sales when you are excited in lieu of going out to try to find a new team member. Your main goal is to build a group of team members that is wide and deep however it is more profitable to build wide in getting fresh new business people on board to try out your product and unique business opportunity. Building a deep network will assure you business security and building deep will equal profitability. To make a network marketing business profitable, people who will engage must have to build teams. Frontrow conducts seminar for the people to know more about networking business and how it improves lifestyle. The company will orient the people who engage to elaborate more of the company’s profile when they are about to deal with future clients. The person who undergoes the discussion about Frontrow, will surely have the power to talk and convince people who will help them to have team and profit. . The main goal of networking marketing business is to build a group of team members that is wide and deep however it is more profitable to build wide in getting fresh new business people on board to try your product and unique opportunity. This is the fundamental thing that so few understand when it comes to the MLM industry. If you want to create a business that lasts, in this industry, you have to be willing to work hard at least in the very beginning. You can build your business as part time as you want in as few as hours as you want but that also means you can take as long as you want. I suggest putting as much time as possible into your business without overly sacrificing your sanity or your family, at least in the beginning. When you get your business to over $10,000 a month residually, you can afford to go  on more trips and vacations. This is the main point of our industry. There is light at the end of the tunnel. With almost all small businesses and almost all jobs, there is no light. You trade dollars for hours, as you rise the rank and compensation ladder, more is expected of you and if you want to slow down, especially in these times, you might get booted out. In this industry, it actually, to the contrary, gets easier. Now, most flake out before they get to the easy part. They either give up out of lack of faith or work ethic or they get to a point where they are making money and take their foot off the gas or lose their focus too soon. Beware of these as they are the killers of the greatly talented. I see it on a DAILY basis where someone of great talent destroys what they were in the process of building to do something else or slack off and think they are at a point where it will automatically grow. There is a 99% chance that you will NOT get to a point of lifetime automatic income prior to 2-3 years of intense focus. Now you know why so few people have what it takes, but, armed with this knowledge, you now do. To sell products is the perception of some people in networking business. Networking business is not actually centered in selling products but they invite people who will help them to build a profitable business. If you engage in a networking business, they will give you their products as part of your investment. In Frontrow Enterprise Philippines Incorporated, to sell products is just an option for you. If you invest in their company, you will receive their products and it is up to you if you will sell it or use it for your own needs. They will focus to teach you on how to interact with other people in order for you to convince them and to build your downlines. In making your networking business profitable, you must be able to exert effort in doing that business. Even some people take it as their part time, it needs a hard work for them to earn profit. Interacting with other people is one of the eagerness of the person in doing their business cost-effective. Some person who engaged in FRONTROW is still students and they can support themselves by the money they receive. Company events and recruitment tactics have hyped things like earnings potential, creating the impression that it’s only a matter of time before you will be rolling in Cadillacs and caviar. Most network marketing recruits never achieve that level of success. In fact, the majority of network marketing recruits never even realize a profit. Network marketing  can be profitable – it just takes an organized and structured approach to get there. Towards that end, these network marketing business tips should come in handy: Understand Your Costs; Create Lists; Make Sales Calls; Stay Focused; Leverage Team Resources. There are strategies and techniques in making your business more profitable. Once you invest in Frontrow Enterprise Philippines Incorporated, they will able to orient you for you to know the organizational culture and the strategies on how you will expand your business. People who will invest should have hard work in recruiting or inviting others to be their downlines and help them as well in building their business. Frankensteins determination Essay Example

Frankensteins determination Essay Example Frankensteins determination Essay Frankensteins determination Essay Essay Topic: Frankenstein This shows Frankensteins love of science, and he uses a good metaphor to describe his feelings towards the above mentioned scientists they were his gods and he was their disciple. This inspires Victor to go on to become a great doctor and physicist, studying at a university in Ingolstadt. It is here that Victors passions for learning the secrets of nature are revealed. These authors were not regarded as serious scientists in Victors world, and were shunned by his father, who dismissed them as sad trash, yet Frankensteins determination overruled this and he continued to learn more and more each day. If it werent for these books, which were only read because of a flash of lightning, Victor would never have had a passion for science and would not have created the being in this novel, which means that the entire purpose of the novel can be traced back to a single bolt of lightning a marvel of nature to young Frankensteins eyes. This part of the book shows Victors enthusiasm for what is still merely a harmless game, I had gazed upon the fortifications and impediments that seemed to keep human beings from entering the citadel of nature, and rashly and ignorantly I had repined. : It is preparing the reader for what is to come, but the sheer volume of Victors interest is unstoppable and quite disturbing for a child of his age. The novel is set at a time when science was of ever-growing importance, and this scared many people. Theories were appearing which people did not understand, which went against everything they had assumed to happen in the world. People were finding out that all is not as it seems, and as more and more of the scientific world unfolded to society, the more and more people wanted to find. Some were obsessed with science, striving to find out new things, which only set people unnerved. They thought science would take the place of nature, but this novel goes to show that this is not true instead, they can only work together, and as the importance of science grows, so does the importance of nature, especially in this novel. Frankenstein proves that science and nature can both work together in society, and shows how important they are in todays communities. At the time it was written, just after the French Revolution, people were also obsessed with romanticism and Gothicism. This novel incorporates both of these, by dealing with the social issues of poverty, unemployment and violence. It appealed to readers in Mary Shelleys society, as well as our own today, and opened eyes to the dangers of society and the wonders of nature. The story of Frankenstein is about a man who creates something that meddles with the course of nature, and nature comes back to mess with him, which just goes to show the power of nature. It presents nature as both beautiful and destructive at the same time. It shows that there is more to this world than meets the eye, and that all things are not either good or bad, it simply depends on how you use them. It reflects on Mary Shelleys social background, suggesting that she wanted to try and change the world, or at least warn them of the consequences of certain actions, which are even more important now than ever. The book is very successful in both horrifying the reader, but also in discerning the dangers of interfering with the most powerful force in the world nature.

Contemporary Feminism essays

Contemporary Feminism essays The Type of contemporary, or second wave feminism that appeals to me the most is that of Black Feminism. This type of feminism appeals to me the most because I feel that the black feminists are the strongest. I feel this way because not only are they fighting for rights as women, they are also fighting for rights as people and as a race in this world. Black women are oppressed because of their race, and again because they are black. Yet, nonetheless, they continue to fight for womens rights and for black rights. In this cruel and ugly world, they find strength within each other to rise above their oppressors and continue to fight as slow as the process may be. They want to join other women in the fights for rights but at the same time realize that it is a step-by-step process and they must earn rights as a race before their voices can be heard as fighters for the gender. They have a strong sense of community and work hard to help each other. Black feminists offered a lot of in sight into what working towards freedom was, it was not only about womens rights. Shirley Chisholm said Working toward our own freedom, we can help others work free from the traps of their stereotypes, In the end, antiblack, antifemale, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing, andtihumanism. This is something that perhaps a white feminist would not of thought of because they were too worried about their own rights. I appreciate black feminism the most because I believe they are the smartest when it comes to rising above oppression, their demands are not irrational and they represent all oppressed people. They have a strong sense of what they are fighting for and at the same time understand the complexity and struggle that comes with the fight. The type of feminism that appeals to me the least is that of Separatism. Separatist feminists believe that it is impossible to change society, so in the place of...

Heart-rending and Gut-wrenching

Heart-rending and Gut-wrenching Heart-rending and Gut-wrenching Heart-rending and Gut-wrenching By Maeve Maddox Although widely used by a great many speakers, an expression that makes me cringe is heart-wrenching. Gut-wrenching is fine. Guts twist, both literally and figuratively. And in the bad old days people had their innards pulled out as a form of torture and execution, hence the verb to disembowel and the expression to draw and quarter. To me, something described as gut-wrenching is frightening, the way its used in this readers comment: In a mystery the reader is trying to figure out what is going on and the puzzle is more of a brain teaser, but not a gut-wrenching life and death struggle. Heart-wrenching, on the other hand, always strikes my ears as mistake for heart-rending. I suppose that an argument could be made for either heart-rending or heart-wrenching, but it seems to me that when someone says, The sight of the displaced earthquake victims was heart-rending, the emotion felt is probably more gentle than the violent word wrench would suggest. wrench: trans. To twist or turn (a thing) forcibly or with effort; to jerk or pull with a violent twist A strong argument against heart-wrenching is that neither the OED nor Merriam-Webster includes it, while both the British and American dictionaries have entries for heart-rending/heartrending. OED: heart-rending: That rends the heart; terribly distressing. So heart-rending vbl. n., terrible distress, pangs of anguish; ï ¿ ¼heart-rendingly adv. Merriam-Webster: heartrending: causing intense grief, anguish, or pain I suggest reserving wrenching attached to gut for things that cause fear, and rending with heart to describe emotional pain caused by the sight of something truly piteous. MBA Markeing Communications Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

MBA Markeing Communications - Essay Example hand even cheaper products sometimes move rapidly in the market because of the strong marketing communication between the manufacturer and the consumers. Marketing people have many weapons like advertising, branding, direct marketing, graphic designs, packaging, sponsorship, public relations, sales promotion online marketing etc in their armoury to communicate effectively with the market. This paper briefly analyzes Sales Promotion as an integrated marketing communication strategy. Sales promotion is an activity intended for increasing the sale of a product undertaken by organization. It can be of different types based on the market and the product specialties. It is difficult to pin point all the sales promotion activities because of the high volume of creative and innovative sales promotions are entering in the market daily. Manufacturers spend millions of dollars in researching for new methods in sales promotion since they know very well that the traditional sales promotions may not attract the customers much. ‘Buy-One-Get-One-Free (BOGOF), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), New media, Merchandising, Free gifts, Discounted prices, Joint promotions, Free samples, Vouchers and coupons, Competitions and prize draws, etc are some of the common sales promotion methods’ (Sales Promotion, 2009). â€Å"Buy-One-Get-One-Free† is a common sales promotion campaign undertaken by marketing people. The consumers will be offered another one when they purchase one, free of cost in this type of sales promotion strategy. In customer relationship management, the consumers will get bonus points for every product they purchased or service they used which can be later converted in purchasing another product or service later. For example, most of the airliners offer the passengers bonus points for the air miles they travelled in their aircrafts which can be later converted to another free trip. Free gifts are another method for attracting customers. When we purchase a car,

What is 'Globalisation' and why is it said to be so important for Essay

What is 'Globalisation' and why is it said to be so important for current international relations - Essay Example Globalization of Economy has taken place thanks to the improvement in transportation technology, and due to the concept of a Free-market society which the WTO is currently promulgating. When different nationalities begin to manage their economic decisions along the same procedures or guidelines or when the economy becomes internationally interconnected globalization of economy is believed to have taken place. There are different viewpoints as to whether the globalization of economy is beneficial or not. In a study conducted by IMF it was discovered that in the last two decades income inequality has risen thanks to financial globalization and technological advancements (which is a factor of Economic Globalization). However it was also discovered that the per capita income has also seen an increase even in the poorer classes. Inequality is on the rise between the different income classes as the well-to-do have a steeper rise in their per capita income as compared to the middle classes. Globalization has raised the eyebrows of even its supporters as they believe that its gains must be more widely distributed to actually encourage other countries to promote globalization. (Falk, 2007) Initially the responsibility of national governments was to protect the citizens of the state by outsiders, provide shelter and to take care of their needs. But as the global scenario has been changing over time the responsibility of the governments has also included becoming members of global organizations for their survival. This has been due to the global ecological changes, an integrated global economy and other global trends decision making has progressed to the global arena. Institutions such as IMF, European Union, United Nations, and World Bank are the major decision makers and enforcers of policies which should be established by member countries. This factor of globalization is the most related to International Relations. With the entrance of America into

Marriege & Family - Assignment Example Young girls and boys are taught how to view marriage as a lifetime commitment and prepare adequately for it. I was fortunate enough to learn the values that should govern the marriage institution from a tender age. When I became of age and was ready to get married, I knew that I needed to find someone who could complete my life. I was well aware that I needed to have good qualities so that I could have something to contribute to my marriage. Therefore, I began to cultivate good qualities that define a noble wife before I got married. When I met my husband, I did not rush into a relationship. I ensured that I got to know him well enough and understood his strengths and weaknesses. Before we got married, we prepared adequately for our union. The most critical preparation was making decisions that could define our lives in marriage (Rubio 44). For example, were clear about the number of children we wanted to have, as well as how we would share responsibilities within our family. I ensured that we had similar perspectives regarding the most important aspects of life. Notably, two people cannot have exactly the same perspectives. However, some fundamental issues in marriage cannot work out if people have different perspectives. When I was sure that I could spend my life with him, we began to formalize our relationship. Finally, we held a beautiful wedding that marked the beginning of our marriage. We held a church wedding that symbolized our commitment before God and people. Therefore, it was obvious that separation or divorce was not an option from the start. My culture has strong values attached to marriage and does not condone divorce. The men in our society have learned to appreciate the social views concerning marriage. In addition, our men are willing to make marriages possible. In addition, the cost of marrying a woman is too high to consider divorce. Although many people may consider our society highly

My Teacher, My Hero Essay Example for Free

My Teacher, My Hero Essay When my friends asked me to write again, I decided to start my compilation with something meaningful, a themed essay for the My Teacher, My Hero theme, contrary to last year wherein I had a hard time choosing who to pay tribute to, this year is much different, it was easy and I believe, it is the most obvious choice. Everyone has someone to keep them on their own feet as they walk through life. Normally, it would be your parent or friend, but mine is different, I had kept myself intact with the help of a teacher. Teachers are usually there to impart knowledge and give you an opportunity to move on with life, I was blessed to have someone during my college days who takes time to make sure that I was okay and the strength to hold on to when everything else went astray, he was Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda. I first met Engr. Pineda as my professor back when I was in First Year (Advanced Programming Languages in C) , back then, things were just inside the classroom – lectures, quizzes, exercises which brought my confidence back after losing my scholarship during the previous term but things turned different when I was in my Third Year and he became our thesis mentor. He turned out to be the #1 Supporter to what we have wanted in the first place, the Alumni Tracer for FEU – East Asia College. Despite both parties having to adjust to the situation of having a part-time mentor last year, we both exerted effort to follow-up and communicate with each other. Since I was always doing the documentation portion of most our projects, I was the one responsible for making follow-ups with the mentor, which happened to be Mr. Pineda. I took it as my responsibility to stay late, meet him after classes for checking and even go straight to his FEU Main class just to finish the proposal for our thesis. Unfortunately, our second term was cut short after failing the proposal defense – but when things thought that it was the end of our mentorship with Engr. Pineda, we were wrong. He stayed with us until the very end. He had always made sure that I was okay. He had always made me feel secure especially by showing me how much he believes in the entire group. When we are back for the third term with a different project and mentor, he made sure he would ask us about our thesis and he was one of the few people who first congratulated us after a successful defense – indeed, he showed me that he was true to his words when we started communicating, â€Å"Dito lang ako for you, parang si Ms. Bong (Evelyn Ruth M. Manuel)†. He never left the group, he never left me during the good times and the bad times. Even if he is not physically present, his presence would always be felt wholeheartedly, and in the little ways he does it, I am extremely grateful. As time pass by, I looked up to him as one of the best friends and as my â€Å"dad† in school. I still see him from time to time. He has helped mold my character to be as strong as it is right now. He has his own way of teaching me things, he doesn’t get mad easily when you do something wrong, however, he has his own way to show you that you are wrong and it is proven effective to me, I managed to make amends and never do things again. For all the things he has done for me, all I can do to repay is to be there for him as well. I know I would be supporting him in whatever he would aspire to do in his life. I also look forward to see him finish Doctoral of Information Technology sometime next year for it would add weapons to his already impressive curriculum vitae. I hope he touch more lives and help direct it to a better place, just like how he helped me push my life back on track. My life would never be perfect. I would always experience the roller-coasters of being a human being but I would always remember one thing, that indeed, I was blessed. I was blessed to have people that would guide me. I was blessed to have people who would accept me for who I am. Furthermore, I am blessed to have Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda in my life, whatever you do call him, he would always have a special place in my life, a great mentor, friend and a dad. Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda, hats off†¦ my 2011 would not be complete without having the opportunity to thank you for everything that you have done for me.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Film Techniques

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Film Techniques In this essay, I would like to talk about a film which is called Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It is a ancient Chinese martial art film, it is according to Chinese novelist Wang Du Lus novels written by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as the basis for further adaptation of films. After the release, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon create the highest box office of foreign language film in U.S. history .The local incomes was 1.28 billion U.S. dollars, and become the worlds largest Chinese-language films movie incomes. This film shines on the international market, and also covers 40 international awards in one fell swoop. In addition, in view under the influence of exceptional film, so that some company intends to follow the movie again to re-set off a wave of martial arts films. As regards to the film, it has a great success, not only because the script and good performers, and also because of the director in the framing, composition and other photography operation, succeeded in bringing to record the role of the real moment to the audience. Because of these Factors, this film can be a huge success. As far as to the film genre, it is a Chinese martial art (Kong Fu) film; it has a bit different with the normal martial art film. In the natural martial art film, it is a type of entertainment, a film which the circumstance includes a series of action scene most: fighting, special effects, car chases, explosions. The story is usually the side of justice against the evil side; the solution is often resort to violence. Action film masters always a physical strong male hero, generally obvious that he represents the moral standards, the ethical guidelines of Western culture in general and consistent with view of the world. It always uses some external factors and props, to create tension in some of the scenes the audience, most of the plot revolves around violence. In the film, action itself only a few describe role, but primarily in order to attract viewers. Violence, which are often particularly exaggerated, and therefore there is no relationship between the real phenomenon. (Wheeler W , 2000, p.82) However, in the Chinese martial art film, especially since by Bruce Lees films started the emphasis of human power and human-looking action movie. One of the features including the slow motion effects, strange sound, and has led to the formation of sub-genres: Kong Fu movies. It advocated every movement should have a beauty of physical, and good at use some small action to show that how good of the Kung Fu, such as using a very small action to break the table, walking on the wall with using a dodge. In addition, in every Chinese martial art film, it emphasizes on justice and the evil can not win the righteousness, and also it would show the traditional Chinese etiquette diplomacy before the use of force. (David W, 2006, p.226) With respects to the special features of the Chinese martial art film. Martial art in the West and the East direction, but it has a fast and slow polarization difference. Western films dealing with the fight scenes, deliberately slow down the action so lush clearly show the Chinese martial arts films are used to using a lot of quick shots, the process of manufacturing the tense atmosphere of martial arts. This is a very interesting phenomenon, the formation of the main differences between Eastern and Western audiences viewing experience to accumulate. So in shooting to this film, the director focused more on how to make martial arts become even more beautiful, so in the camera movement and the focus would always change, let the audience also can feel the emotion from the performer s movement. (David W, 2006, p.137) For the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, its talking about a sword bring out exact revenge against, which also interspersed with the presence of chivalry, in addition highlights the profound Chinese martial arts are also show feelings of love between the protagonists. In the story, Limu Bai (the main character) prominent position on the arena, because he wanted to retired, and entrusted to his love Sword Qingming Jian for Yu Xiulian, and told her transferred it to the Royal Highness custody. However, at the midnight, one girl call Jen sneaked into the imperial palace steal the Qingming Jian to her master, after that, The characters began to develop a complex relationship because of the sword. As regards to the technique of the camera movement in this film, most of the audience would like to concentrate on the action of the characters in the Chinese Kong Fu film, as result of this, most of the senses in the film are shooting the fighting in the film. In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , it has a scene which has two girls order to the sword and fight with each other. In this scene, the location is in the courtyard of the house, which means it is like a chamber of secret. It is represent both of them must has one will be die, as the coliseum in Rome in ancient time, and also it has a lot of weapon on the wall, when they are fighting, Yu always change different kind of weapon to confront Jel, it is because she is using the reason of their struggle - Qingming Jian . (Malkiewicz, Mullen, 2001, p.55) Moreover, in during shooting their fight, the lighting was using the low key lighting, this is in order to bring weapons spark generated when the collision so that the audience will be more tension into the plot. Furthermore, for the camera movement, firstly it is a long shot to show the location and they are going to fight, and then it use a lot of close up, over shoulder and extreme close up to illustrate how they fight with using different Kong Fu and weapons, during they are fighting, it also has some bird s eye view shot to show how intense of their fight, because it also show the ground fault of the weapons and the struggle traces. In the one particular shot of this scene which is show her shaking hand, and pan to her face and her body, although her whole body is shaking and got hurt in the fight, but she still want to against to Yu. In this scene, it is totally talking about how the thief fight with the protector, however, the thief also has her own belief comply with all orde r from her master. It s show how chaos of the society in that time, for the most of the people they believe stronger can do whatever they want. This is the reason why Jen very eager the Qingming Jian and stole it. (Malkiewicz, Mullen, 2001, p.219) However, in this film, it also has a very justice side, such as Jen tried to grab Li s sward in the palace, but he caught her attack and taught her the truth of life rather than hurt her. Finally, when Jen deflower captured, He told her: virtue can actually win over a person, rather than by sharp weapons or high-strength Kong Fu. In this scene, the director side of the Lis kindness and noble character with a special composition to show up, for example, it use a lot of two shot and over shoulder to show the audience that Li want to guide her back to be good rather than hurt Jen, even though in one scene, Li trough the Qingming Jian into the waterfall from the top of hill, but Jen still jump down and tried to get it back; in this scene, it use a long shot and till down to show the audience the Jen jump down to the waterfall without any hesitation, and also from Li facial expression, it s completely show to the audience that how Jen desire of the power and bring out how Li lamenting he r, forming an enormous comparison. (David W, 2006, p.97) As far as to the reason why the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon can get a great success rather than other film, it s because the director Ang Lee Tried to attract the whole world audience , as people know, Chinese martial arts is undoubtedly elements of the definition of foreigners, so you want to grasp this point Lee, Feiyanzoubi , superficial, roof chase, throwing knives hidden weapon, fighting on the tree .. a series of Chinese products duel, foreign How can people do not seem strange? How can audience not surprise? The way in the shooting, the director Ang Lee has done all the details in every possible way. in the light text effect, he spent most of the low key lighting to keep the mystery of kung fu; the lens shooting, he spent a lot of The third-person perspective and two shot make the audience appreciate the traditional Chinese martial arts, and he can also take care while a lot of details, such as eye contact play against the two sides, the audience can understand the meaning of what they want to say without the dialogue. And in all of the shooting locations, those are based on the original to choose the location. For the storyline, it s also different from the general martial arts is an endless stream of good and evil struggle, Li and blue-eyed about the conflict of good and evil really chivalrous, but this conflict has been simplified, it is no longer the whole story centres, on the contrary, Li, Yu and Jen into the conflict between a very important clue, and this trail Behind the concept is actually the collision of two lakes: Lee swallowed things, experience the vicissitudes of life, like Qi Jian can not, and Jen is newly hatched into the society, the martial arts as an escape, pleasure allies and enemies of the solution, Li: abide by the rules, is a wisdom, rather than a trite. More in order to insinuate the director of youth in our society should think twice before doing things. (Clifford W, 2009, p. 84) In conclusion, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the second after Bruce Lee; it is a great classic of traditional Chinese martial arts film, which not only martial arts into a kind of popular culture, this is catching on people heart. On the other hand, they too successful, who later left to insurmountable heights. Most of the classic martial arts to the protagonist as a narrative perspective, such as the works of Bruce Lee. However, in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the protagonist is not clear, there is no obvious emotional tendencies, the director always stand in a more neutral point of view to describe this story , makes the film seem relatively calm, even if the final outcome of the tragedy, there is no excessive emotional catharsis. So, the director Ang Lees martial arts perspective, not chivalry, but in the political arena, his intention is want arena as a special form of society to describe, display, and analysis the narrative perspective of a neutral has become a necessity. As a film, Ang Lee must be discarded offshoot of distal, straght the point; therefore, it is no longer a knight who owed focus, they shuttled between the secular arena and the sorrows and joys, gains and losses, and what they are thinking about is the key pointo of this film. Moreover, the director also not always looking at the development of conflict, he often intentionally or unintentionally, the main line of the story with the then secular society, people practices cross the shuttle, so as to find countless ties between them provide a Imagination. (Clifford W, 2009, p. 98) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is not like a general Chinese Kung Fu film, its advantages in its overall production well structured film, paper and wind distribution of the average, the plot to promote smooth, entertaining; costumes and sets are elegant, rich taste of China. in addition it also use a very great cinematography technique to support the director s idea, which is instead the deep meaning of human thinking in the society at that time, this is Ang Lees unique talent and style.
